B is for Barriers

In yesterday’s post I talked about the aurora borealis, glowing evidence of an invisible barrier that surrounds and protects Mother Earth against the alien forces of the universe. Even here on the face of the planet and among those of us who inhabit it, we depend on all kinds of invisible barriers for protection. A mother’s love shelters her child. Wisdom and intuition enable us to elude danger. Even prayer can serve as a guide.

But just as some barriers serve to shield us, others tend to isolate us. They lock us up. Prejudice, anger, hatred, and injustice separate and divide us. Self-doubt, misunderstanding, fear, and mistrust fence us in.

There are barriers to happiness, to success, to peace, and to friendship. Hurdles to personal growth. Obstacles in our journey to fulfillment--all of them invisible to us. Which is why it is important to imagine a gate and to search for the key to it...

...or to get a ladder and scale it. Or to take a bulldozer to it…because there are some barriers that simply must come down.

What barriers will you take down?

“Love recognizes no barriers.
It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls
to arrive at it destination full of hope.”

  1. Loved this post, Jan. (And very nice to meet you, btw!) I'm a sucker for quotes (my 'B' post has a couple) ...

My wife is a physician, so I enjoyed reading your bio, and wish you the most success possible in your new'er endeavor. :-) Blogging has really helped me in terms of writer's isolation, and I hope you make tons of blog-friends as well.

Can't wait to read what you come up with for the rest of the A-Z!

  3. You know, as I lay down the other night to bed, I lamented that I did not think of writing about the aurora borealis... THANK you for covering that for me! :D

  6. Do you really want me to answer that question? Because that might be a bit of an over share. It's a good thought though, if we don't open the gate or scale the wall, let down our barriers, then no can get in. Even those who enrich our lives and make it wonderful. :)
